Em 1988 acabava o fraco desempenho dos Chevette: os modelos lançados em setembro ganharam 9 cv no motor e não estavam mais condenados a ficar na rabeira dos demais carros nacionais da categoria 1.6. Mais que isso: acelerando de 0 a 100 KM/h em 13 segundos e chegando a 153 Km/h, o Chevette já ficava ligeiramente à frente dos Escort comuns e dos antigos VW com motor MD 270 ( Gol, Voyage, Parati até 1985).
